I'm waiting for an Asian historical doll. I really wish they'd make one...
I don't have an Asian AGOT but she's definetly "on the list". I just started collecting, so I'm kinda just catching up to you "originals" out there. You all have been very helpful so far. Thanks!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">When I got my Asian AGoT I had exactly the same reaction. Having lived in Japan for three years (and visited a lot of Asia) as a translator, I was pretty accustomed to most of the facial characteristics of the different Asian groups and, in my humble opinion, she has the facial characteristics of what the Japanese call "haffu" (Hawaiians use "happa") or "half". Half this and half that. I did not bond with her originally simply because I couldn't figure out where she was supposed to be from. While AG might have intended for her to have a racially/ethnically ambiguous face, I think it was most likely accidental.Originally posted by mom_to_an_americangirl:
I have the asian AGOT as well and may be in the minority but I am not sure I like her. She is pretty but I can not figure out which culture she belongs to... she doesn't quite look Korean or Chinese or Japanese or Filipino (or any other asian culture I left out). I guess that is by design but I am having trouble with that. MY S-I-L is Filipino and lived in Japan and we looked at her carefully and were still at a loss.
Once that dawned on me, I set out to discover her name and named her after Winnie Cooper of the Wonder Years. In my mind, my Winnie is a child of a Japanese and American marriage. This seems to be quite the rage--the rate of out-of-group marriage being much higher in the Japanese-American community than any other group. That my "war bride" of 35 years is Japanese made this easier...
Now, Winnie is one of my favorite dolls. She has the most beautiful hair. I would not consider giving her up now...

Sandra,
Thanks for the link to the Joan Hinds book. The dress looks great. I may have to look into that! I have seen the seller on eBay and I am not sure about buying from Hong Kong.
I was also glad to know what doll that was in the picture. She is so cute!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Oooh you know Japanese? I really want to learn Japanese and visit Japan. I like Japanese art, esp. their architecture, clothing, painting & prints, and calligraphy. And one of my favorite "imports" is Sanrio (the maker of Hello Kitty). Did you learn Japanese from your wife?Originally posted by Taffy Cheerful:

I also have Kimberly from Gotz and she is very pretty. I have named her Hoping which I was told is the word for peace in Chinese. (Emphesis on Ping.) I have the Mandarin outfit through this company and it is nice! Also I have ordered several things from Hong Kong from Ebay sellers and am amazed how cheap and how quickly things arrived!!! Jan
I actually might be going to China this summer, so maybe I should get my own Asian doll LOL.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">No, I was trained by the Defense Department. My spoose was born there, raised in the US from a very early age and then went back to Japan in her early teens. She had to learn Japanese as a second language, but she went to English speaking schools the whole time.Originally posted by Ann (Leia at heart):

Much of the language training is fading, but when we go back to visit family every several years, it comes back...

The Asian-American AGT (I always thought she was suppossed to be Asian/American)is pretty but I wish they'd make a historical Asian doll. I have the Chinese New Year outfit. Sam wears it now. A gift from GrandMary and the Admiral from their visit to the "Orient". "Oriental" is quite the latest fashion in 1904!
I know a few words in Japanese taught to me by the exchange students we have hosted and my good friend Keiko. Her husband is from the Dominican Republic and they are raising their daughters tri-lingual! After a day visiting Japan their 3 year old was speaking fluent Japanese like a native.
